3 Careers to Consider if Youre a People Person

3 Careers to Consider if You're a People Person Photo by Tra Nguyen on Unsplash Teacher   Think back to all of the teachers that you have had up until now. For most students, there has been at least one teacher (more if you are lucky) that has gone far and beyond to help you at some point in your academic career. It could have been offering more help in a class you found yourself struggling with immensely or a teacher that you grew close to and have gotten plenty of life advice from. These teachers are more often than not seen as a people person themselves, as they view their teaching position more than just a source of steady income they see their job as a way of being able to reach out and help their students. Being a people person will help you excel as a teacher, regardless of the grade level you are teaching. By being a people person, it will be easier for you to put yourself out there for your students to get to know you and feel more comfortable with you, seeing you as more than just someone that is there to lecture them and keep them in line. It will allow you to go one step beyond by reaching out to students in need giving extra academic help or lending an open ear for a student going through a difficult time. Nurse   As a people person, being a nurse can be the perfect career for you as you are expected to interact with a wide variety of people depending on the type of job you find yourself in. You can work in a large hospital or a small clinic, or go for more personal jobs like working in a retirement home or attending to someone in their own home. You are expected to be able to communicate with your patients, picking up on both nonverbal and verbal cues to make their treatment as successful as possible.   This can be utilizing your people skills by making them feel comfortable regardless of the setting, whether you are interacting with them in a big hospital away from their home or in their own home. Youll also be attending to their medical needs, like explaining their situation to them as needed or giving them the medical attention that their treatment plan requires. For nurses, its important to connect with patients and make them feel comfortable as they get the medical treatment they need. Being a people person will enable you to do just that as you are more attuned to their mood and will be able to pick up on how to interact with them, and you wont hesitate to reach out when you see that they are struggling or in need of assistance and too scared to ask for it. Counselor   A counselors job is to interact with patients on a daily basis. If you are a people person, this may be the perfect career for you. There are a set of skills that are essential to becoming a successful counselor and as a people person, you may already have the set of skills needed for a career as a counselor. Being both a great listener and a great communicator is necessary for becoming a counselor as you will need to listen to your patients as they talk through their situation without interrupting them or asserting what you think of the situation before they have even finished trying to say what they want to say. While you are listening carefully to what they are expressing to you verbally, its also important to be able to pick up on nonverbal cues like fidgeting or facial expressions that can be even more telling than what they are explicitly stating aloud. Its important to listen to them fully and understand what they are saying in order to communicate your feedback after they have expressed what they have wanted to. Being able to clearly communicate and express what you are thinking so that they are able to be able to fully understand and process what you are trying to say. Being a people person can have its benefits and disadvantages, but you should use it to your advantage, especially when it comes to finding a career. As a people person, some careers will be easier than others as it enables you to use your people skills to excel in the field. Being a people person will allow you utilize your ability to easily interact with others, and make a career out of it.

MCAT Undergoes Significant Changes for 2015

MCAT Undergoes Significant Changes for 2015 Photo via flickr.com “One of the things students really will be surprised by are how much more integrated the science content is in each of these sections,” he said. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) will replace the old Verbal Reasoning section. CARS will exclusively include passages about social sciences and humanities, but will maintain the same critical thinking skills the old Verbal Reasoning section had. In last year’s MCAT, “the Verbal Reasoning section was not only the section that most isolates the critical thinking skills that you need to be successful in medical school and beyond, but it was also the section score that correlated the most strongly with students’ performance on the board exams,” Chiu said. Introductory psychology, introductory sociology and biochemistry will be courses added to pre-medical curriculum, jumping required prerequisites from eight to 11. “They’re really having to squeeze in those 11 semesters of pre-requisite coursework during their first two and half years or so,” Chiu said. The Association of American Medical Colleges decided to incorporate behavioral sciences to equip medical students for proper bedside manner and to understand the various social-economic factors of health and health care, Chiu said. Pre-medical students will face 230 questions over 6 hours, 15 minutes versus 144 questions in 3 hours, 20 minutes on the old MCAT. Each of the four sections on the new MCAT will receive scores from a low of 118 to a high of 132. An overall score will range anywhere from a low of 472 to a high of 528. The old MCAT had a total possible score of 45, the high being 15 across three sections. Chiu suggests that students take the MCAT in the spring or summer semester of their junior year. He also points out that preparation for the new MCAT is different considering the test will be longer and cover a broader content base. Students are “going to have to use their time even more efficiently,” he said. “They’re focusing on the areas where they need the most help, and where they can get the highest deals in terms of scoring more points on test day.” Leo Diaz, a 19-year-old UF biology freshman, said he’s hoping to apply to medical school and is concerned that the revised MCAT is more challenging. “I don’t see why they have to go and make it longer and more difficult,” he said. “Kids stress out enough about it already.” Diaz said he feels stressed in a way, but hopes high standards will better prepare him for rigorous courses in medical school. “The addition of three pre-requisite courses is going to really add onto the load,” he said. “It’s going to be difficult for kids to handle that and still keep up their GPA, but it’ll sure weed out the kids who aren’t equipped.”

Neuro-what Why Neuroplasticity Is the Key to Making Your Smart Kid Even Smarter.

Neuro-what Why Neuroplasticity Is the Key to Making Your Smart Kid Even Smarter. Neuro-what? Why Neuroplasticity Is the Key to Making Your Smart Kid Even Smarter. What is neuroplasticity? Many of us can still remember hearing, “Don’t hold your breath until your face turns red! You’ll kill your brain cells and they’ll never grow back!” Growing up we knew our parents’ wisdom should typically be trusted, and you probably shouldn’t hold your breath until your face turns red. But as it turns out, we didn’t really need to worry about killing or stunting the growth of our brain cells. Not too long ago, even scientists thought the brain stopped developing in early childhood. It was commonly believed that genetics and genetics alone dictated our ability to learn. We’ve since discovered that the brain changes and develops throughout a person’s lifeâ€"a concept called neuroplasticity. Think of your brain like a forest. To navigate from one end of the forest to another, a deer cuts a path through the trees. As increasingly more animals follow that path, the grass gets worn down, and the path becomes clear and easy to follow. Without the repetitive steps of the deer and squirrels and rabbits, the path would become unpassable, overgrown with plants. A fox trying to cross the forest would not be able to find his way. As we learn, our brain grows by creating and strengthening pathways between brain cells. These pathways can be created and strengthened at any point in our life, but develop at a much faster rate in early childhood. We learn constantly when we are youngâ€"how to talk, how to walk, how to reactâ€"and pathways are thus continually created. As we grow, these pathways get pruned just as a gardener prunes a shrub, and our brain takes shape. The stronger the branch, the harder it is to trim. Developing strong pathways when our children are young can lead to lifelong benefits. How can you use neuroplasticity to help your children’s development? Treat the brain like a muscle. We know that children’s brains are ripe for development. Treat them like muscles and train them to get stronger. Just as consistently lifting weights will build stronger muscles, consistent study will build stronger pathways in the brain. Incorporate this daily practice into your routine by setting aside just a few minutes a day to complete daily math exercises , stick to a nightly story time, or practice flashcards. Before you know it, your children will be reading chapter books and multiplying fractions! Teach your children about the concepts of neuroplasticity and growth mindset. Simply teaching children that their efforts impact their abilities leads to increased learning! Growth mindset, a concept established by Dr. Carol Dweck, is the understanding that intelligence and abilities are not set in stone, but can be developed. As we’ve learned, this belief is proven through the science of neuroplasticity. And as Dr. Dweck learned, when students are taught about the concepts of growth mindset and neuroplasticity, they perform better in school. Here are some tips on how to teach your children: Recall a time they really struggled to learn something. “Remember the first time you tried to ride a bike without training wheels? You fell off so many times that your knees were all scraped up. Now you can ride circles around me!” Praise properly. Instead of praising a trait, “You’re so smart!” praise effort, “You worked really hard today!” Embrace mistakes. Let your children know that making a mistake is natural when they’re trying something new or difficult. Give an example of a time that you made a mistake, and how it helped you learn. It’s encouraging to know that we can continue to learn throughout our lives. You can teach an old dog new tricks after all! But why not take advantage of your child’s rapidly developing brain to maximize learning opportunities? Teach your children that they can learn anything if they set their minds to it, and they will benefit their entire lives. What Is An Analytical Chemistry Textbook PDF?

What Is An Analytical Chemistry Textbook PDF?An analytical chemistry textbook PDF is usually what is presented as an alternative to a traditional book when teaching your students. The result of having an alternative which the students will find more acceptable is lessened tension during the course and this is something which the teachers are interested in. It is also good to know that if there is a certain event in the career of the student, he or she may be able to get a particular method of treatment or knowledge since that is what they may want to do as well.Even if a student decides to go for a book to help them get through a particular phase in their career, it is still important to keep in mind that they can choose other books that are suitable for themselves. As you may already know, your textbook is not a guide or a brief but a strategy in a certain area of the course. Since it is one of the crucial tools, you must know what your textbook is all about and how it is presented. So you must know whether or not it is worth your while. You must remember that the purpose of the textbook is not only to tell you about the basic principles but it is also a reference that helps you in knowing the basics of a certain subject. When you read a book or a study guide you should make sure that you are actually reading the right part of the page or in the right paragraph and you should be able to get through the whole chapter, if it is really an entire chapter. You must not always rely on the looks of the book because there is a lot more than meets the eye and the textbook as a whole will look different from one person to another. When you are studying a subject, you should not only rely on what is written but also on the different perspective of the author and how they represent the things. There is always a book with a different way of looking at the world and that can make a big difference when it comes to comprehension and understanding. You must also make sure that th e book has been revised and you can tell the major changes by looking at the cover and inside of the book. Also take note of the author of the book, since that is a good sign that the book is worth your time and effort. When you are selecting a book, do not worry about the price of the book but rather concentrate on the quality of the book and the resources available. Many websites will allow you to choose the contents and the site will also provide you with the kind of book that you want to have. Of course you can always choose a special edition that is normally priced much higher. Finally, think about the education that the book provides and its importance to the future of your students. It will also be important to see whether or not you have options on what kind of textbook to buy since they come in various sizes and with various resources for your students.

The Best Way to Learn Spanish Formal Commands

The Best Way to Learn Spanish Formal Commands Maile Proctor Not sure when to use formal or informal commands in Spanish? Here, language teacher  Jason N.  shares his tips to help you understand the different types of commands, and the easy way to change Spanish verbs to commands When youre studying  Spanish you will learn about the different types of commands. Commands in Spanish arent as easy as they are in English. In English, theres no distinction between formal and informal commands. For example, to make the verb to run into a command, all you need to do is remove the to and simply say, run. Pretty simple, right? Commands arent as straightforward in Spanish. In order to understand Spanish formal commands and how they work, lets look at the distinction between informal and formal commands. You should use an informal command with someone you know well, like a friend, cousin, spouse or classmate. On the other hand, use a formal command with an older person, a superior, and people of high status like doctors, judges, priests, policemen, and lawyers.  If you don’t use formal commands with these types of people, you may unintentionally offend them by addressing them informally. Here is a closer look at Spanish formal commands, and a guide to converting verbs into commands. Using Spanish Formal Commands Use formal commands to show respect when you address a person.  If you want to convert a verb into a formal command, use these three steps: Remove the last two letters of the verb in its infinitive form. For example: Hablar = Habl Remember to flip the ending. The ending refers to whether the verb is ends in -ar or -ir/-er. If it ends in -ar, simply change the a to an e. If its an -er/-ir verb, change the i or e to an a. Add the new ending to the end of the word to create the formal command. Here are some examples: Step 1: Hablar  Habl, Step 2: the a becomes an e Step 3: Hable Step 1: Correr Corr Step 2: the e becomes an a Step 3: Corra Step 1: Vivir Viv Step 2: the i becomes an a Step 3: Viva Practice changing these verbs into commands: Beber Dudar Cambiar Recibir (beba, dude, cambie, reciba) Plural Commands To address more than one person, simply add an n to the formal Spanish command. Hable Hablen Corra Corran It seems pretty easy, right? It can get a little tricky when the verbs are stem-changers or irregular, but your Spanish tutor can help you understand these more complicated topics. For now, practice conjugating verbs into Spanish formal commands, and learn the appropriate times to use them. If you have any questions, make sure to write them down and go over them with a teacher or private tutor. Transformers The Practical Science of Electromagnetism.

Transformers The Practical Science of Electromagnetism. Why Transformers are Some of the Most Important Technology We Have. ChaptersWhat is a Transformer? How Do Transformers Work? These days, everything depends on electricity â€" from the tools on which we work to the places where we get our entertainment. Everything seems to be powered and charged, plugged in, connected to the mains. We use electricity literally all the time. And so we take for granted the fact that it comes straight into our house, until it is right there in the wall next to our bed, sofa, or desk. And whilst we no longer appreciate quite how amazing this is as an infrastructure, many of us probably don’t know much about the technology that all this is dependent upon. This is the transformer, a piece of electromagnetic equipment that facilitates electricity’s journey from power station to plug socket.Without it, we’d have none of the things that are so normal in our daily lives. In fact, we’d have nothing electrical in our homes at all. That’s why we need to take the time to learn about these simple little things, these ubiquitous little contraptions. Because without them, we’d still be living in the conditions of the 1820s â€" or thereabouts. This article is part of our series on magnetism and electromagnetism. Because this is the fundamental phenomenon on which power transformers are based. Do you remember what electromagnetism is all about? If not, before you read on, check out our article on the science of electromagnetism. If yes, then let’s crack on. Let’s talk about the power transformer â€" one of the most underrated objects we have. You can find a physics and maths tutor s1 now. We wouldn't be able to transfer electricity without electromagnetism.connections between different circuits are crucial. And this is particularly true when we are talking about circuits that require different voltages. And this is the second major thing that transformers do: they allow the transfer of power from a circuit of high voltage to one of low voltage or medium voltage. This particular fact is really important â€" as you will see.Power Distribution and Power Transfer. But let’s take the role of transformers in power distribution first.Pretty much all electrical power in the world passes through a transformer at at least one point in its life cycle. It is incredibly likely, in fact, that it passes through several. Only the smallest fraction of electrical energy is produced by on-site generators â€" and so doesn’t need to be transferred. And so, transformers play a role in all the energy that comes into the conventional home.Electricity distribution happens on an absolutely mas sive scale â€" crossing countries if not entire continents. Considering that the electrical current has such a long way to travel from the producer to the consumer, transformers are often used to break up the circuit into smaller parts. This allows greater stability in the line â€" and makes it easier to isolate issues.Step Up and Step Down Transformers. The most common use of transformers is in their particular roles as a step-down or step-up transformer. These underpin the functioning of the whole electrical grid â€" and permit the arrival of any electrical energy into your home.Voltage vs Current. This is because the electrical grid works through transmitting electrical currents of extremely high voltages.Things like the National Grid, the electrical transmission network in the UK, can’t really use high currents. Generally speaking, the higher the current, the less efficient the transmission is. With higher currents, more heat is produced â€" and more energy is lost as it is rele ased through the wire.Current is the rate of flow of electrical charge. So, the higher the current, the quicker the electricity passes through the wire. And whilst this is all well and good, so much of the electrical energy is wasted if you transfer it over long distances.Voltage, on the other hand â€" or EMF as it is sometimes known, electromotive force â€" is the potential difference between two different points in a wire. This is the electric pressure that allows the current to flow. In other words, it is the amount of energy that is required to transfer current along a wire. These things are all using magnetic fields.Transforming Voltages. So, electrical grids use incredibly high voltages â€" rather than high currents. But there is an obvious problem with this. Whilst high voltage electricity is much easier and more efficient to be transferred, it is much more dangerous to actually use. Having incredibly high voltages in all our plugs would not be very clever. And so, the grid uses transformers to ‘step-up’ the voltage of the electricity before it is to be transmitted and to ‘step it down’ again afterwards. Before it can be distributed on a local level â€" and before it reaches anyone’s home â€" the voltages need to be hugely reduced, as the voltages in national wires are thousands of times higher than those that your laptop or your kettle could handle. This is happening with all of our electrical energy. So, you can see how important these transformers are for our lives. How Do Transformers Work? Now you know what transformers do. But how do they d o what they do? This is the question to which we need to give an answer now. And you’ll find that that answer is linked entirely to the force known as electromagnetism.Electromagnetism is the interface or combination of electric current and magnetism; these two things are two sides of the same coin. And transformers work by exploiting this relationship.Transformers are really quite simple devices. In their simplest forms, they are two coils of wire around a ferromagnetic core. Imagine this to be a ring of iron, on the opposite sides of which are two windings of copper wire.A current passes through one, and into what we’ll call the primary winding. As the result of the electric charge’s magnetic field, changes in the magnetic flux of the iron core will electrify the secondary winding on the other side. This, quite simply, is the basis of how the ideal transformer would work â€" through this process of what we would call electromagnetic induction.Faraday’s law â€" named after the man who discovered electromagnetic induction, as you’ll see below â€" states that you only need to change the number of coils on the secondary coil and you change the voltage that appears in the second circuit.Faraday and Magnetic Flux.It was Michael Faraday that discovered these principles of electromagnetic induction that have become central to the technology of the transformer. He built himself a little transformer exactly as we just described it above. And, linking one side up to a battery and the other side up to a galvanometer, he noticed that the electrical charge was only present in the secondary wire when â€" and only when â€" he connected and then disconnected the battery. This was the essential part of his discovery. When the electrical current was stable in the first wire, no electricity was observed in the second. What was required was the change in the electrical charge. It was this change that effected the change in magnetic flux in the iron core â€" which permitt ed the transmission of electricity. The Importance of Alternating Current. This discovery informs the way that transformers work today. As they only work with alternating current â€" as opposed to direct current.Whereas direct current is a stable current that only travels in one direction, alternating current â€" or AC â€" continually changes direction. This produces the change to the magnetic flux that permits the transfer of electrical current across the transformer â€" or, in other words, that permits the induction of electricity in the secondary wire.Without this variability of the magnetic field in the transformer, there could not be any transfer of electricity at all. Compasses use the same physical principle as transformers. The Importance of Electromagnetism.Michael Faraday made this discovery back in the 1830s. And, although there have been attempts to make the process simply more efficient, the fundamental principles of the transformer have not changed one bit â€" and nor will they ever. This is why the transformer testifies to the fact that electromagnetism is one of the most important discoveries in the history of our world. So, you better make sure you learn it.
